Designers can teach us how to live sustainably

In 2019, living sustainably isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. Across the world, people are responding to the need to act on climate change by using recycled materials, native ingredients and renewable technology.

But what can you do as a consumer to help facilitate the transition from disposable living to sustainable living? You can start by learning from some of the world’s most innovative designers and stylists.

Buy from responsible businesses

By supporting businesses that are committed to sustainability, you are telling the market what you value. Choose to give your money to businesses which use ethically-sourced and sustainable materials.

Buy direct

By shopping directly from the maker of your piece you are cutting out the middle man and minimising your carbon footprint. Buying directly reduces transport and storage costs, making it cheaper for you and better for the planet.

Be a minimalist

We live in an era where we are constantly bombarded with media telling us what to buy. Not only that, but new products are endlessly being created to replace the “old” – mobile phones, for instance, are being released faster than we can keep up. By buying only what you need rather than what you think you want, you can help reduce the extraction of raw materials and help conserve the planet’s resources.

Question everything

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! It is the responsibility of businesses to be transparent. Ask things like: Who made the product? What materials were used and where were they sourced? Can the product be recycled? Don’t simply take the word of marketing material you have read – ask the staff themselves!

Living sustainably in this day and age is easier than ever. Be self-aware and ensure to buy only what you need from ethical businesses.
